SUMMARY:Montauk Weekend, February 6-7, 2027
DESCRIPTION:\nDate: Saturday, February 6, 2027 – Sunday February 7, 2027\n\n\n\nLeader: Joseph DiCostanzoTransportation: This is a carpool trip. The Registrar will coordinate rides for participants without a vehicle. Riders should expect to pay a suggested carpool fee to the driver in addition to other trip fees. Generally, there are enough drivers to accommodate everyone, but rides are not guaranteed as they depend on volunteer availability.Meeting Point: After your registration is confirmed, the Registrar will share directions, the exact meeting place, and time with attendees.Schedule: Overnight trip – Saturday night in a motel, all day Sat’y and Sunday excursions.Relative Difficulty: Expect two full days of birding at various locations. The terrain may include beaches flat trails . There is a lot of driving and getting in and out of vehicles.Trip Description: Montauk is the easternmost point of New York State and is known for the high numbers of ducks and pelagic birds that concentrate there in winter. On our way to and from Montauk, we will make several stops, including Point Lookout, Jones Beach, and various freshwater ponds. We will spend the night at Daunt’s Albatross Motel.\n\n\n\nWe will bird local hotspots at Montauk Point, Camp Hero, and Montauk Inlet. Target birds include Black Scoter, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Common Eider, Lesser Scaup, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Northern Gannet, Razorbill, Common Goldeneye, and several gull species. Rarer species we might find are the King Eider, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Iceland Gull, and Snowy Owl. Most of the birding stops on the trip will be for stationary viewing or short walks rather than for long-distance/long-duration walks.\n\n\n\nRegistration: Registration is in December 2026\n\n\n\nPlease read the About Our Trips ( https://www.linnaeannewyork.org/about-our-trips/ ) page, if you’re going on a field trip for the first time. It details our field trip policies, recommends what to bring on a trip, and offers other useful information, pro tips, and tricks.\n\n\n\nIf after visiting the About Our Trips ( https://www.linnaeannewyork.org/about-our-trips/ ) page, you still have questions, feel free to contact the Registrar via email.\n\n\n\n\n
