The Great Gull Island Bird-A-Thon is back!

Each spring, birders come together to celebrate migration and raise funds to protect the incredible Common and Roseate Tern colony on Great Gull Island.

Last year our community raised nearly $10,000 to support tern conservation. This year we’re hoping to soar even higher.

📅 Note: We’re gathering one weekend earlier than usual this year to avoid the Mother's Day overlap with World Migratory Bird Day.

Grab your binoculars, start a team, and join the flock.

Cold-sea giant, winter mariner. A Common Eider Cold-sea giant, winter mariner.

A Common Eider rides the nearshore waters off Jones Beach and Point Lookout, captured by photographer Shannon Kelly. Thick-necked and powerful, these northern sea ducks gather in floating rafts along rocky coasts, diving beneath the waves in search of mussels and crustaceans. A striking winter presence along the Long Island shoreline.

Winter surf, coastal drama. From sea ducks ridi Winter surf, coastal drama.

From sea ducks riding rough water to shorebirds holding the line, Jones Beach and Point Lookout delivered a classic Long Island winter birding lineup. Long-tailed Ducks, Harlequin Ducks, Black Scoters, Bonaparte’s Gulls, and American Oystercatchers all made appearances, each perfectly adapted to life along a cold, windswept coast. Captured beautifully by Dominic Ricci, these moments reflect the resilience and energy of winter on the shore.
