Staten Island, Purple Martins Plus
Date: Sunday, July 5, 2026
Leader(s): Leader: Seth Wollney
Transportation: While carpool rides for everyone usually work out, there is no guarantee of enough volunteer drivers to accommodate all participants. The Registrar will work to help clarify rides and to notify participants when a rental car may be necessary. Registrar will also inform participants of the suggested carpool contribution to drivers, which is based on the trip location. The cost of any rental cars should be split evenly by those participants.
Meeting Point: After your registration is confirmed, the Registrar will share directions, the exact meeting place, and time with attendees.
Schedule: The trip will go through the early afternoon.
Relative Difficulty: Prepare for sun exposure and walking over mostly easy terrain.
Trip Description: On this summer trip to Staten Island, we will visit several areas with nesting birds, which may include Bank Swallows at Great Kills Park, Purple Martins at Lemon Creek, and possible Clapper Rails, Little Blue Herons, and other marsh birds at Oakwood Beach Tidal Marsh. Another possible park is Mount Loretto Unique Area for nesting Bald Eagles, plus Willow Flycatchers, Orchard Orioles and Indigo Buntings. There will also be opportunities to observe a variety of butterflies and odonates.
Registration: Registration opens at 9 am on Monday, June 22. After that time, click here to register. Registration closes at 6 pm on Wednesday, July 1. Members (and those who have applied for membership) will be prioritized over non-members.
