Central Park’s North Woods with Ursula Mitra, 10/25/2026

Registrars: Christina Black and Suzanne Zywicki
Participants: 9
Weather: Sunny, with temperatures in the low 40s to mid 60s
Bird Species: 37

Unfortunately, this trip needed to be rescheduled from its original date of September 25th due to a nor’easter, resulting in the group missing the prime window for fall warblers. While a little disappointed, it enabled the group to shift focus to arriving sparrows and ducks and enjoy peak fall foliage.

The group set out from the West 108th Street entrance of the park and headed toward the Great Hill and Pool areas. As is often the case, the Pool provided good views of a variety of ducks, including a continuing American Wigeon, five Green-winged Teal (including a beautiful male), and a male Wood Duck; as well American Black Ducks, Gadwalls, Northern Shovelers and a Ruddy Duck.

The group then travelled through the Loch and nearby areas and ended at the Meer. Overall, the group saw five species of sparrow, as well as several House Finches and American Goldfinch. There was also a possible fly-over of Pine Siskins, but no confirming photos were taken. Another exciting sighting was having a large mob of crows fly directly overhead while chasing a Cooper’s Hawk.

As always, the group was able to take advantage of both Ursulas’s deep knowledge of the birds as well as the areas that form the North End.
