The Linnaean Society of New York

North Country Adirondacks Winter Birds

Date: Friday, February 16, 2024-Monday, February 19, 2024

Leader: Joan Collins
Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. However, the registrar will help connect those in need of a ride with other participants who are able to offer one. (The exact meeting place and time will be shared with attendees after their registration is confirmed.)
Schedule: Four-day trip with two intensive birding days. Weather conditions will dictate the travel plans.
Relative difficulty: It will be cold with a lot of car birding. Special clothing is required.

Enjoy a weekend of winter birding in the North Country with Joan Collins, the preeminent Adirondack guide. This four-day trip will focus on the boreal, mixed forest, and wetland habitats, where we will see both year-round residents and irruptive winter species. Our guide will leverage ear-birding to identify the birds.

Winter in the Adirondacks offers the opportunity to see many spectacular birds, including the “boreal trio”: Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Canada Jay. Based on the availability of tree seed crops, there is a different mix of irruptive birds each year. These might include Red Crossbill, Pine Siskins, Common Redpoll, Evening Grosbeak, Snowy Owl, or Bohemian Waxwing.

Space will be limited to 12 people. Participants will enjoy a video call before the trip to learn more about the itinerary. Days start between 5:30 and 6:30 am, and winter weather might impact our plan. Pending weather conditions, we can bird during our travel days. All details, including a specific target list, will be confirmed before the trip.

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.

Registration closed. This trip is full, with an extensive waitlist.
