The Linnaean Society of New York

Green-Wood Cemetery

Date: Saturday, April 13, 2024

Leader: Rob Jett
Public Transportation: (The exact meeting place and time will be shared with attendees after their registration is confirmed.)
Schedule: Half-day trip, morning, ending around noon.
Relative difficulty: Expect to walk about two to three miles on (mostly) paved paths, with some moderate inclines.

Situated along the Harbor Hill Terminal Moraine in Brooklyn, this 478-acre National Historic Landmark features hills, valleys and kettle ponds. Green-Wood Cemetery is a magnet for migrating birds, which makes perfect sense given the more than 500 species of woody plants that qualify it for Class III Arboretum status—one of only 31 in the world. In addition to spotting numerous songbirds, we’ll visit the hawk-watch hill north of the Civil War Monument—a great vantage point to scan for migrating raptors. Thirteen species of raptor, plus both vultures, have been recorded at the cemetery.

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.
