The Linnaean Society of New York

North Country Adirondacks Summer Birds – TRIP FULL

Date: Friday, June 28, 2024-Monday July 1, 2024

Leader: Joan Collins
Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. However, the registrar will help connect those in need of a ride with other participants who are able to offer one. (The exact meeting place and time will be shared with attendees after their registration is confirmed.)

No matter the season, New York’s North Country offers extraordinary birding in a spectacular setting. Our guide, Joan Collins, will introduce us to the boreal habitat, where we can find species typical of locations much farther to the north in Canada. Our guide will leverage ear-birding to identify birds, and it is not uncommon to hear without seeing certain species.

This trip allows us to see and hear many spectacular birds, including the “boreal trio”: Boreal Chickadee, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Canada Jay.  The Blackpoll Warbler and the endangered Bicknell’s Thrush will be found high on the summit of Whiteface Mountain. Northern New York has nearly 30 species of nesting warblers, and we will likely find at least 19 within the Adirondacks. The diversity of habitats is another attraction: grasslands; shrublands; deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forests; lowland and high elevation boreal areas; marshes; swamps; bogs; lakes, rivers, and brooks; etc.

Space will be limited to 12 people. The weather is typically chilly in the morning and buggy and hot in the afternoon. We will start early with 2:15 am and 4:45 am call times. While driving to and from the Adirondacks, we will likely stop at spots such as Albany Pine Bush Preserve and Vischer Ferry. Participants will enjoy a video call before the trip to learn more about the itinerary.

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.
