The Linnaean Society of New York

Evening Bat Walk, Central Park

Date: Thursday, July 11, 2024
Rain Date: Friday, July 14, 2023

Leader: Danielle Gustafson
Public Transportation: (The exact meeting place and time will be shared with attendees after their registration is confirmed.)
Schedule: Early evening to 9:30 pm.
Relative difficulty: Short, easy walk, with lots of standing.

This evening walk will be led by the New York City Bat Group’s Danielle Gustafson. We will meet near the American Museum of Natural History, walk over to Central Park as a group, and sit at a spot on a lawn that affords the best view of a number of bats. Danielle will discuss the ecology and dynamics of NY bats and bring heterodyne bat detectors for participants, as well as a bat iOS detection device. If you would like to record the bats, you can download the free iOS app: Echo Meter Touch Bat Detector by Wildlife Acoustics. Bring a blanket, binoculars, and a flashlight or headlamp for bat viewing. When the session ends at 9:30 pm, the group will be escorted out of the park by the leader.

Because bats are facing a devastating disease called “White Nose Syndrome,” a toxic fungus affliction of the nose and bare skin that disrupts hibernation, we request a $5 donation per person for Bat Conservation International.

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.

Registration opens at 9 am on Monday, July 1. After that time, click here to register. Registration closes at 6 pm on Monday, July 8.

Please read the About Our Trips page, especially if you’re going on a field trip for the first time. It details our field trip policies, recommends what to bring on a trip, and offers other useful information.

If after visiting the About Our Trips page, you still have questions, feel free to contact the registrar via email (or phone, if listed) between the hours of 9 am and 9 pm.
